1332 | History | Maplehurst | Wace's Wadhurst
The Castle is a new name for the very old Maplehurst. In the Wadhurst Subsidy Roll of 1332 (Edward III.) we find " Matilda of Maplehurst" assessed, and it was then just an "old farmhouse after the style of Great Pell."
1685 | History | Maplehurst | Wace's Wadhurst
The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) made its mark in Wadhurst by the arrival of at least one French Protestant at Maplehurst. Connected with this, probably, there exists the original list of " moneys collected in the Parish" of Wadhurst for the relief of the Poor Palatines, 1688." The total, £1 11s. 1d., is made up of forty-eight contributions, and attached to the list is this note - "The above mentioned Palatines were terribly ravaged by the French in 1688, some thousands of the mixed peasantry were sent to America by the British Government and by the British people."
1686 to 1689 | History | Maplehurst | Wace's Wadhurst
Maplehurst was for a very long time held by the Sheldons, " eminent merchants dwelling in or near London." In 1686-9 a Sheldon was rated for it.

c 1810 | History | Maplehurst | Wace's Wadhurst
Early in the last century Thomas Sheldon sold Maplehurst to Jas. Louis West, a Devon man, many years resident in India. … He pulled down old Maplehurst, and built the present house of sandstone, brought from the ruins of Faircrouch; hence its old appearance with battlements round entire edifice; in demesne of about 224 acres, disposed in woods. While still building he died (1819) leaving his Wadhurst and Devon property to two friends - in trust for M. A. Talbot.
c 1826 | History | Maplehurst | Wace's Wadhurst
In 1826 the completed house and property [Maplehurst] were acquired by Aylmer Haly, of the 4th K.O. Dragoons, in exchange for his estate of Beaudesert and vineyard in the Commune of Onzouer-sur-Tresse, in Canton Briare. Haly at the same time bought from Henry Playsted Luck's land, adjoining Scrag Oak. … Haly turned Maplehurst into Wadhurst Castle "by reason of its situation on the verge of the town."
c 1844 | History | Wadhurst Castle [a.k.a. Maplehurst] | Wace's Wadhurst
Later he sold the property to Robert Harding, and the latter's mortgagees sold it in 1844 to Edward Watson Smyth - once more a London Merchant - who in 1870 added rooms on the north side, using stone from the quarry below the village.
