GEORGE COLE of Edenbridge, butcher (1690-1748)

He was the son of George Cole of Edenbridge, butcher (1656-1719) and Mary Cronck. He was baptised in Edenbridge on May 24th 1690.

In 1710 George Cole of Edenbridge was accused of stealing wood and rails (Sevenoaks Petty Sessions). One would have thought that this would be the son rather than the father but when a second accusation occurred in 1718 it was stated to be the first offence, so that unless the indictment of 1710 resulted in an acquittal it had to be George Cole senior.

In 1709 Sevenoaks Petty Sessions ordered the parish officers to take up George Cole junior of Edenbridge, and also Theobald, a glazier of Edenbridge, possibly John Theobald, and bring them before the commissioners to be examined for the army. John Theobald was cousin to George Cole junior. A month later the churchwardens of Edenbridge were asked why the men had not been brought forward, and the reply was that they were both less than 5 ft 4 inches tall, and therefore too short for the army. One presumes that the two men were layabouts.

In February 1718 Thomas Budgen of Skinners Farm in Edenbridge, a colleague of William Cole at Bellmans Green, complained that George Cole and George Theobald (brother of John) had cut down and removed some wood. George Cole and George Theobald were arrested and brought before the magistrates and convicted. It being the first offence they were both ordered to pay 12s to Thomas Budgen.

In April 1718 the Sevenoaks magistrate again issued a warrant against George Cole, and ten days later against Daniel King on the complaint of George Cole. Daniel King was a farmer and was constable during 1717-18. On 11th March 1721 there was a further warrant to arrest Daniel King on the complaint of John Millions, husbandman. The warrants of 1718 and 1721 may have had a connection with a disturbance in which a group of men including George Cole cut weirs and bays on the Eden river on property belonging to the Earl of Rockingham. This was related to a quarrel between Thomas Underhill and others of Lingfield and Thomas Webb and others of Edenbridge concerning the use of a stream, a quarrel between millers. The case was heard at the Surrey Quarter Sessions and resulted in all parties being fined. Presumably the George Cole who took part in the trespass was George Cole, junior, but George Cole senior was still alive, dying in 1719.

In 1720 George Cole was imprisoned in Maidstone Gaol at the suite of Edward Walter for £30 and of Thomas North for £15. Thomas North was an attorney of East Grinstead, which suggests that the legal action over the weirs had driven him to insolvency. In 1724 George Cole issued a humble petition from Maidstone Gaol asking for pardon and was released in 1725. After this he was impoverished and between 1726 he or his wife received charity payments (though they were not on parish relief). In 1730 the Bridgewardens paid George Cole for filling up with stones the wheelruts on the Great Stone Bridge. In 1733 George was paid 1s for work at the church and in 1736 his wife was paid 2s for mending the clergyman's surplice. Mary Cole died in 1738 (buried February 9th at Edenbridge) and George in 1748 (buried June 5th at Edenbridge).
