GEORGE COLE, butcher and victualler of Westerham, (1711- )

He was the third and youngest son of James Cole (1666-1736), butcher of Westerham. He was baptised at Westerham on September 21st 1711. On his death James Cole bequeathed his property to his sons James and George. The property included the messuage occupied by Thomas Outram and a parcel of land called Buckham Hill (Westerham manor). Buckham Hill had belonged to George Cole, vicar of Godstone (1679-1730) who left it to his widow Barbara for life, with remainder to James the father of George. However Barbara left her house and land in Westerham now occupied by George Cole, butcher, to her sister Mrs Francis Green of East Grinstead. George seems to have sold his rights to the messuage and land to Thomas Green, presumably a relative of Mrs Francis Green.

From 1731 to 1736 George Cole was recorded as the licensee of the Bull's Head in Westerham. In 1738 he was listed as a freeman eligible for jury service, ie worth over £10 a year. One source of his prosperity appears to have been smuggling.

1734, 20th December George Cole of Westerham, victualler, fined for the treble value of 3388lb tea come to his hand between 7th July and 25th January 1733-34.

1735, 17th December. Read the report of Mr Wyatt the solicitor on the affidavit of Robert Ashby, who is of the opinion that George Cole of Westerham, victualler, may be prosecuted for the treble value of 150 lb of tea come to his hands the beginning of March 1733. That the said George Cole, ................ Ferguson of Little Newport Street, Westminster, a dealer in tea and Margaret his wife, and George Bell of Drury Lane, tailor and his wife may separately be prosecuted for the treble value of 400 lb tea come to their hands at Midsummer 1733. That the said Bell and his wife, and William Ferguson may each of them be prosecuted for the treble value of 400 lb of tea come to their hands the latter end of 1732.

1736, 16th April. Richard Smith of Westerham, baker, may be prosecuted for the treble value of 312 lb weight of tea come to his hand between Michaelmas and Christmas last. (Customs Board Minutes).

In 1737 George Cole is recorded as occupying Pittfields in Ryeland, in Westerham. It is always possible that there is confusion here with George Cole, cordwainer, who rented a house, shop and four acres of land in Westerham in 1724. His children were born in Westerham between 1725 and 1735. If George the cordwainer is a member of the above described Cole family the link has not been found.

It is difficult to give a coherent account of George Cole after this. In the Brasted overseers' accounts there is a reference to lands held by a George Cole before 1734 in Brasted. Between 1738 and 1750 a George Cole held land from the manor of Brasted. In 1742 George Cole had bought a messuage and garden near Squerries Green in Westerham (manor of Squerries) and still held it in 1769.. In 1755 he renounced his rights of common on Squerries Green, together with others.

No Cole was listed as a ratepayer in Westerham in 1770. There is no record of George's death, and no mention of a wife.
